Jewellery Care
Silver is a soft metal and is easily damaged. It is also natural for silver to tarnish when it is exposed to light and air, a process known as oxidation occurs. However, there are things that you can do to slow this process and keep your jewellery looking its best.
Store your jewellery in a dark and dry place. Avoid mixing up several pieces of jewellery together as this can result in scratching and damaged and tangled chains. The box your Gill Howard Jewellery arrived in has an anti-tarnish strip in the bottom, this will help to protect it, or store individually in acid free paper or zip lock bag.
Using a silver polishing cloth, (or any lint free cloth but avoid paper towels or tissues) to regularly polish your jewellery items to keep them bright and tarnish free. However, if tarnish is left to build up, it is harder to remove by gentle rubbing. If tarnish persists use a silver cleaning product and follow manufacturers instructions.
Perfumes and body lotions will leave a patina on your silver, so always put your jewellery on last. Avoid spraying perfume directly on jewellery.
Cleaning agents and bleach are damaging and may leave your silver looking dull. Avoid swimming, bathing, showering and using cleaning agents when wearing your jewellery.
If your item of jewellery has been oxidised to give it a blackened finish, I would recommend storing it separately to your other jewellery and not to clean it as this may remove the finished effect.
If your jewellery has a matt finish it can be restored by gently rubbing the surface with a green pan scrub or very fine wire wool in one direction. Please note matt surfaces naturally polish smooth with wear.
