About Gill Howard
I entered the world of jewellery making in 2007, when I attended silversmithing classes in Cambridge.
For many years I had a career in scientific research, as an electron microscopist, studying the ultrastructure - fine detail of cells and tissues only visible at higher magnifications. I spent many years in a dark room, looking into the fascinating and complex world of the cell and its internal organelles in relation to their structure and function.
Now retired from science, I can indulge my creativity, to design and create handmade silver jewellery from my studio in the Shropshire countryside, using the microscopic world of cellular biology as inspiration. I can devote my time to creating unique pieces of jewellery, using traditional silversmithing techniques, starting from a piece of silver sheet or wire to creating wearable pieces of art.
I enjoy working and experimenting with a variety of styles and techniques which produce new creative ideas and designs. I think this is reflected in the eclectic range and style of my jewellery.
Although I may replicate the original basic design, each piece is individually handmade by me and therefore no two pieces are identical, enhancing the individuality of each piece. Some of the pieces that I make will be unique 'one off ' pieces. The majority will be made to order.
The jewellery I make also reflects my liking for wearing bold, statement pieces rather than small delicate designs. I enjoy using 'circles', which are ubiquitous in the natural world, and the infinite variations that can be created, for example, using different shape, size and textured wire.
I am always working on new designs and would be happy to work on any ideas that you may have in mind.
An aspect of metalworking that I also enjoy is the hand raising of sheet metal (copper, silver & brass) into a 3D form or structure. I will occasionally add these pieces.
Having lived in Shropshire for several years now I have been influenced by the macroscopic natural world around resulting in botanical works in copper.
Even if you are not familiar with this normally unseen world, I hope you enjoy browsing through the website.
